The Dangers of Deep Venous Thromboses

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) in San Antonio, TX

A deep vein thrombosis or DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein in the leg or pelvis. These tend to happen in people who have had prolonged immobilization due to either significant medical illness or major surgery. Some people have blood clotting disorders or illnesses that increase the risk for DVT’s. The risk of developing a DVT increases dramatically with age.

Deep vein thrombosis is a life-threatening medical emergency since a blood clot may travel from a deep vein through the heart and cause a blockage in the circulation to the lungs. This is called a pulmonary embolism. Unfortunately the diagnosis of a DVT is often difficult. The most obvious symptoms are the rapid onset of pain and swelling in one leg.

If a deep vein thrombosis is suspected, evaluation and treatment in an emergency department at a hospital should be sought immediately.
