How to Tell the Difference Between Spider Veins and Varicose Veins
Differences Between Spider Veins and Varicose Veins
Large bulging veins are called varicose veins. Small visible veins are called spider veins or telangiectasias. Medium sized reticular (blue) veins may be normally visible or may be dilated. Usually there is a larger incompetent vein that communicates with veins that bulge or become visible. As veins are subjected to higher than normal pressure, they become dilated and inflamed. This often is the cause for pain and other uncomfortable symptoms that result from the abnormally high pressure in the veins. If venous inflammation becomes severe enough, it is called phlebitis. Other effects of venous insufficiency include swelling, dry cracked skin, discoloration and persistent ulcers.
None of these problems will resolve without treatment.
